2017 HERCULES school

Following the success of the 2016 edition, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste welcomed the students of the 2017 HERCULES school for one week of practicals from March 20th to 24th.

HERCULES is a worldwide known 1-month school providing training for students, postdoctoral and senior scientists in the field of Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for condensed matter studies. It includes lectures, practicals and tutorials in Grenoble, where participants follow a common session and two parallel ones A) “Physics and Chemistry of Condensed Matter” and B) “Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics”, completed by a week at a Large European facility (this year Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste , PSI, Soleil/LLB).

Group picture, scientific lectures and practicals on the Elettra and FERMI lightsources.

In Trieste the 24 students, coming from both session A and B, could benefit from high level scientific lectures and practicals on the Elettra and FERMI lightsources, also involving the CERIC-ERIC distributed research infrastructure. The programme was tailored on the participants’ background and interests, and involved: 7 Elettra beamlines (BaDElPh, DXRL, IUVS, Materials Science, SAXS, SISSI and TwinMic), 3 laboratories (NanoInnovation, Structural Biology and T-ReX), 4 FERMI beamlines (EIS-TIMER, EIS-TIMEX, LDM, MagneDyn and TeraFERMI), the FERMI control room, the PADReS FEL light transport system as well as a visit to the Elettra synchrotron tunnel.  A very lively session was organized on March 23rd: thanks the availability of Elettra scientists the students had the opportunity to discuss their research and future proposals/collaborations in 1-to-1 meetings with Elettra and FERMI beamline researchers.

In the framework of the MIUR project "Alternanza Scuola Lavoro" a fourth year student of the Trieste Galilei scientific high school joined the group to experience the high-level training offered by Elettra and FERMI. The Friday social programme included an interesting visit to Grotta Gigante, to the Monrupino fortress and a dinner with local products tasting in a traditional agritourism on the Carso.

Elettra is looking forward to hosting the 2018 HERCULES edition and all former participants as future users!
