Materials Science Beamline


Welcome to Materials Science Beamline!

The MSB (Materials Science Beamline) is a versatile beamline suitable for experiments in materials science, surface physics, catalysts and organic molecules on various surfaces. The tunability of the photon energy over a wide range (22-1000 eV) with mainly linearly polarized light from a bending magnet source offers "classical" UPS and XPS with high energy resolution and tunable excitation energy for the best photoionization cross sections. The beamline also allows resonant photoemission (RPES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopies. Sample rotation about two axes allows angular resolved photoemission studies. The MSB was built in cooperation between the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Charles University in Prague and Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste.

Proposal Submission

We invite all users and collaborators to discuss their proposals with the beamline staff before the submission deadline. This is crucial for a careful assessment of the experiment feasibility and may lead to improvements in the proposed experimental plan. Our website provides a wealth of information on experiment feasibilty and proposal submission. Note that proposals must be submitted via Virtual Unified Office (VUO), selecting "Submit a new CERIC proposal".

Call for proposals closed

The current call for proposals is closed. The next deadlines for proposal submission for beamtime allocation from January to June 2021 will be:

  • 1 September 2020 at 17:00 to have a pre-evaluation and the possibility to improve your proposal
  • 30 September 2020 at 17:00 final submission, recommended only for users that are experts in all requested techniques.
